'How Much Line?'

LINE COUNTERS. We started out supplying them with our downriggers:

And we still do. With downrigging you can often see your weight on the sounder screen:

But early on we found these little clip on removable counters are handy for heaps of other purposes. Here’s what I’m talking about:

First was fishing deep water, using electric reels:

You’re probably thinking that electric reels have their own digital counter on a screen. They do! But we’ve often found a difference between our Tanacom readout and the line counter numbers. Important, because over rough ground like Browns Mountain you really don’t want your heavy expensive sinker bouncing along the snags. Note that, in this case, the line counter should be clipped onto at a spot where, when the rod’s under load, the line goes through the counter at 90 degrees. Here’s me cranking hard for the last 5 metres at Browns:

But in my opinion the best thing they’re good for is, spooling reels. You know when you buy a new reel and printed on the box it says ‘holds 200 metres 0.3mm braid’ or similar? Put that new reel on your rod, clip on the line counter, and find out how much your reel REALLY holds. Here’s how they work:
