A drag that sticks, jumps or changes pressure is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Worn washers are one possible cause, but line slipping around the spool, sand or salt near accessible parts, incorrect assembly or another worn component can feel similar.
Start with these checks to separate spool slip from a drag fault and decide when the reel needs service. Keep the reel manufacturer's manual beside you, and do not dismantle an unfamiliar drag stack.
Record the symptom first
- Sticks, then releases: pressure builds before line jumps free.
- Pulses: resistance rises and falls during one steady pull.
- Changes during a run: the drag begins one way and becomes noticeably heavier, lighter or rougher.
- Will not hold a setting: tightening or loosening has little predictable effect.
These descriptions make a service request useful. They do not prove which part is faulty.
Check whether the spool is really turning
Watch the spool while line leaves the reel. If the line moves but the spool stays still, braid may be slipping around the spool arbor rather than the drag releasing. Daiwa's service FAQ recommends watching whether the spool turns when line continues to come out with the drag tightened.
Do not keep tightening the drag to hide spool slip. Correct the line attachment and spooling method for that reel, or have it respoolled, then test again.
Establish a safe baseline
Fit the reel to its rod and run the line through the guides. Set the drag light and have another person apply a steady pull from a safe position, or use the reel maker's documented test method. Daiwa's drag-setting guidance warns against holding the rod and pulling the line back toward yourself because the rod can be bent dangerously.
Repeat the same steady pull before changing the setting. Then make one small adjustment and repeat. The useful question is whether the spool starts and continues to turn smoothly and predictably, not how hard you can pull.
Stop if the rod, line, knot or reel is being loaded beyond a safe check. There is no universal drag number for every rod, line and reel combination.
Inspect only the accessible areas your manual allows
Sand and salt can collect around the rotor, inside the spool near the drag clicker and at the spool lip near the drag washers on a spinning reel. Shimano Australia's reel-maintenance guidance recommends removing visible grit carefully without driving it farther inside and says not to pull the reel farther apart.
Follow the exact manual for the reel. A sealed, unfamiliar, warranty-covered or electric reel is a strong reason to stop early. Daiwa's electric-reel safety guidance specifically says not to disassemble the reel yourself.
What visible washer damage tells you
Visible worn, glazed, deformed or broken friction material justifies inspection or service. It still does not prove that every drag problem is caused by the washers, because contamination, incorrect assembly and other worn parts can also affect performance.
Drag stack order, washer dimensions and lubricant choice are reel-specific. Do not add oil or grease as a diagnostic shortcut. If the washers need replacement, follow the reel manufacturer's information and the Carbontex installation guide.

Leave a useful service note
Record the exact reel model, line type, whether the spool turned, the drag setting or test condition at which the symptom appeared, recent sand or salt exposure and anything already changed. A short video of the steady-pull symptom can be more useful than loose parts with no record of their order.
After cleaning and drying the reel as its manufacturer directs, store it with the drag loosened. Both Shimano and Daiwa give that storage advice.
