Self Isolating - Offshore

March 20, 2020

Big plans for Wednesday 18th March! The intention was, head for Brown’s Mountain on a friends boat. He’s a deep water fishing expert who tracks current speeds online – and goes, whenever it slows. But unfortunately it picked up again on Tuesday, meaning we had to cancel:

All good! I had a couple of clients who were keen as mustard to get on the water. Two phone calls and we met up at the ramp on Wednesday morning, going on my boat. Going past Chinaman’s Beach, and saw the pelagics had bait pinned up against the sand. We went to work with the 10 gram jigs, on light 3 kilo outfits:

Good mix of small predators – bonito, salmon, and kingfish:

Soft plastics and small top water minnows like Sugapens have their place. But when the fish are busting up 40 metres off the bow one minute, and 40 metres off the stern the next minute, what you need is a metal that casts like a bullet - and matches the size and shape of the bait they’re hunting. Our 10 gram jigs at 44 dollars for 10 ** including delivery ** are the answer:

Eventually the bust ups tapered off. It was time to get offshore – but we needed live bait first. Thankfully the Centurion wreck in north Sydney Harbour is firing at the moment:

With the bait tank full we rounded North Head, planning on a run up to Long Reef. But as we cleared Bluefish the reverb swell off the cliffs settled down fast. Why not divert and check out the FAD on the way? Next stop FAD 19. But with the water green, cold, and full of sediment there was nothing there:

But the WaveRider buoy was only four kilometres east. Why not?

The mahi were there – although, small. Once again, the 10 gram jigs drove them wild. And our $120 light combo soaked up the runs and jumps:

What a great morning on the water – with a top crew too. Heading out on Friday and trying again, with something a little bigger in our sights. Will report in on the Facebook page with pics and video if anything interesting happens. Thanks for reading
