Light equals Squid equals Kingfish

May 01, 2020

SQUID. So often they are the key that opens the kingfish lock. And if anyone’s cracked the lock on hard to catch Harbour kingfish, it’s the lads I was fishing with every week – before coronavirus. Here’s a few of their catches over the last week. Note they mostly fish out of kayaks? Which can be very difficult in Sydney Harbour, with heavy commercial boat traffic and giant wakes. First up, Xavier:

We found some Harbour kings yesterday, only caught 3 but the one Oscar got was 80+. They were all caught on squid

Myles – not a big one, but caught smack dab in the middle of the lower Harbour, which gets a hammering every day:

And the king Xavier mentioned, caught by his friend Oscar Moore:

Hey Andrew, got this solid 80+ fish the other day on a whole cuttlefish, Xavier and Roman got one each as well

Grant Ironside. Goat Island is just west of the Harbour Bridge:

Squid or live slimy mackerel the go-to baits for kingfish. And there’s an inexpensive trick that delivers both. Check this out:

Hey mate, I used the light I bought off you to catch slimies pre-dawn, then got to spot x for the dawn tide change. Worked a treat!

Our squid light is deadly on squid and baitfish. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s Andrew Waite’s take on our light:

SQUID GALORE

Ours is waterproof, comes with a 6 metre cord, and delivers a super bright green light from even a small 12 volt battery:

At The Spit, in Sydney’s Middle Harbour. It can be used off wharves and rock walls, too:

Note that it does NOT have to be dark, for the light to attract squid? Just low or overcast light. I will post a video (too short for Youtube) to the Facebook page on Friday morning:
