Just Rig A Jig

Regular readers of this little newsletter know how much I love chasing small Harbour pelagics, in summertime:

All summer long the Harbour and the Heads hold swarms of tailor, salmon, kingfish and tuna. They’re easy to find. Just look for the birds:

The key is, match your lure size to the size of the baitfish they’re feeding on. Ninety nine percent of the time, our 10 gram jigs are a perfect fit:

The target fish can’t get enough of them. But just as importantly, these slim little jigs cast a long way, on the right combo. That can make the difference between success and failure:

This summer, we’re taking it to a whole new level. Thanks to a lotta luck and being able to move at the drop of a hat, we’ve managed to rent a harbourside flat for the summer. It’s got a great view of the Harbour and I’m already posting pics of bust ups pretty much every day. Never forget that, underneath all the splashes, bigger fish are hunting the predators. To target those, I use our bigger 40 gram jigs:

If you’re fishing up or down the coast, I recommend making friends with the local coastal patrol. Their base usually has a great view of the local waterway, and if you know someone there you can get an update on where the birds are working.
