Fishing for Fun

So a couple of interesting developments this month! Firstly, one of our regular suppliers developed (what I reckon) is a great new lure - Glow Jigs:

This company is always coming up with innovative tackle but this one was of particular interest because I love jigging so much. What they’ve done is make a recess in the middle of the jig going all the way from side to side:

A chemical light – the sort you bend to break an inside glass tube and start a chemical reaction giving off light – snaps into the recess. I ordered quite a few by air knowing late spring/early summer can be a hot time for jigging off Sydney. At the same time I was hearing about an interesting fishing technique – developed in Japan, where all the best new fishing techniques come from. Ebing lures:

But looking at it I was sure the idea would work great on kingfish – by just attaching a tiny (but strong) hook to the bottom ring of the jig with a metre of 80-pound mono:

I used a split ring and a hard ring at the jig end of the leader, so the Ebing SP could be put on if you wanted to try it – but wasn’t essential. Corey invited me on a run in his super nice Wahoo CC. Too rough for way offshore so we started out downrigging at Whale Beach. Of course I took along some Glow Jigs to see if they worked:

First whack on the downrigger came from a big salmon. But what we really wanted were kings:

After locating where the kings were operating we filled a burley can with chopped pilchards, dropped it down to 15 metres off the downrigger, and worked jigs through the burley trail. Deadly technique, because water pressure squeezes oil out of the pilchards which then rises in the water column, and the ocean chop causes little pilchard pieces to fall through the can mesh:

We’ve all seen videos from tackle companies where they send some TV fishing influencer to a remote hot spot to show how deadly their new stickbait is on GTs, or whatever. If you go to a place which swarms with a target species is that a fair test of your new lure? My gut feeling, having done this so often, is that this Ebing setup is a huge success. But because there were so many fish at the spot, I can’t be one hundred percent sure:

Result fish galore, with around 20 small kingfish. Corey went down to a 1-3 kilo outfit, so light that when fish were lifted into the boat by the leader, it broke:

Even flathead got into the action when we were over sand:
