Way back when graphite rods started becoming popular, tackle company ABU brought out a brilliant model – the Hellbender 800. What a rod! Light, strong, great for casting, great for fighting, super sensitive on light bites. I used mine for bream, bass, salmon, tailor and flathead – until I broke it. Fast forward a few years, and I’m down at Buckenderra, on Lake Eucumbene. At the caravan park servo they had a small range of tackle, and propped up in a back corner was a dust covered rod that caught my eye. Could it be? Yes! So old they had no idea what the price was, so I got it for twenty bucks. When we started the tackle business I sent it to our supplier factory and ordered one hundred copy rods exactly the same. Gemfish and blue eye love these big white super lumo SPs. Used them with a heavy jighead? With the two big pluses being that the hook points up to reduce snags, and you can just leave the outfit in the rod holder. A simple drift makes the tail wobble like crazy.
