Mechanical jigging for kingfish is not about working the rod as hard as you can. The aim is to build a repeatable rhythm that makes the jig accelerate, pause and change direction through the depth where the fish are holding. Get the rhythm right, keep the jig in the strike zone and the technique becomes far more efficient than the frantic arm workout it can look like from another boat.
This guide grows out of one of Andrew Hestelow's original Downrigger Shop reports from August 2018. On that trip, the crew found kingfish stacked at Twelve Mile Reef off Sydney and put mechanical jigging to work. The tackle shown in the archive photographs is now old, but the lessons about rhythm, depth control, sounder use and avoiding unnecessary fatigue remain useful.
The most important idea: mechanical jigging is a coordinated rod-and-reel movement. Once the motion becomes smooth, the rod's recovery helps move the jig and you stop trying to generate every centimetre of lure movement with your shoulder.

Mechanical jigging is a relatively fast, repetitive style of vertical jigging in which the rod lift and reel turn are coordinated to make a metal jig dart upward through the water. A common starting point is a one-pitch rhythm: roughly one rod movement for each turn of the reel handle.
That is a starting pattern, not a rule that every lift must be identical. Kingfish can respond differently to speed, jig shape and the way the lure pauses or changes direction. The useful skill is learning a smooth base rhythm, then being able to speed it up, slow it down or shorten the stroke without losing coordination.
Mechanical jigging is different from slow-pitch jigging. Slow-pitch techniques generally place more emphasis on deliberate rod loading, recoil and the jig's fall. Mechanical jigging for kingfish is usually more continuous and higher-energy. There is crossover between styles, and fish do not care what name we give the retrieve, so let their response tell you how rigidly to stick to any one cadence.
Beginners often make mechanical jigging harder than it needs to be. They lift the rod through a huge arc, stop, wind some line, then repeat. That creates separate movements and makes the arm do nearly all the work.
A smoother approach is to make the lift and handle turn part of the same cycle:
Andrew described the same principle in the original 2018 article: the rod stores energy on the upswing, then the jig continues moving as the rod recovers and line is wound back onto the spool. Once that sequence becomes automatic, you can maintain a much more comfortable rhythm.
Do not obsess over making every stroke large. A short, crisp movement can be very effective. The exact amount of line recovered per turn also changes with reel size, gear ratio and how full the spool is, so copy the coordination rather than treating one person's hand speed as a magic formula.
This is one of the best ways to make mechanical jigging both more effective and less tiring. If the sounder shows kingfish from 55 to 70 metres in 100 metres of water, there is little value in repeatedly jigging the entire 100 metres to the surface.
Put the lure through the marked band, continue far enough above it to cover fish that move with the jig, then drop back and repeat. If the school changes depth, change with it.
Sometimes the marks really do occupy most of the water column. This archive sounder shot from Norfolk Island is a good example:
The principle is simple: let the electronics decide how much water you work. That saves energy and gives the jig more time where a bite is actually likely.
In August 2018, reports came through that the kingfish bite had improved at Twelve Mile Reef off Sydney. Andrew assembled a crew, launched from Middle Harbour and headed offshore. When they arrived, plenty of other boats had received the same news.
The important part was what appeared on the sounder. There were kingfish stacks worth dropping on, so the jigs went down. New crew member Josh Sumner was soon loaded up.
Fitz hooked up next. The original photographs also show how busy Twelve Mile can become when a bite is widely reported. Other boats were close by, which makes controlled drifts and awareness of where your line is travelling even more important.
The point of keeping this old report is not to claim Twelve Mile always fishes like this. Kingfish move and offshore conditions change. It is useful because it shows the complete sequence: find a live patch of reef, identify the fish depth, put the jig through that band and keep repeating an efficient retrieve while the opportunity lasts.
There is no single correct speed. A fast mechanical retrieve is a proven way to trigger kingfish, but the right pace is the one the fish respond to and you can reproduce cleanly.

One useful experiment is to count a comfortable number of handle turns at one cadence, then deliberately change pace for the next section of the retrieve. You are not trying to memorise a formula. You are making your changes repeatable enough to notice what produced the bite.
A perfect jigging rhythm is useless if the lure never reaches the fish. Choose a weight that gives you reliable depth control first, then work on the retrieve.
The old version of this article promoted 150 g jigs as the answer for mid-depth winter reefs. We would not make that blanket recommendation now. Our own later fishing showed why. On one Texas Reef trip a 100 g jig on thinner braid outperformed a 250 g setup ; on another, a heavier 250 g jig was exactly what was needed to reach fish holding on compact deeper structure.
Use the lightest jig that reliably gets to the marked fish and stays under useful control. If current or drift sweeps it away, go heavier. If the heavy jig is unnecessary and tiring, lighten up. Our jig-weight selection guide explains the complete 100 g vs 250 g example.
The rod, reel, braid, leader and jig need to work as a system. Start by matching the rod's jig-weight range to the weights you genuinely expect to fish. Then choose reel and line capacity appropriate to the depth, fish size and structure.
Mechanical jigging does not automatically demand the biggest reel or heaviest rod you own. More weight in your hands becomes meaningful after dozens of drops. At the same time, going too light around hard reef and large kingfish can leave you without the line strength, drag margin or lifting power the situation requires.
Reel gearing also changes how a setup feels. Lower gearing generally gives more torque under load, while higher gearing retrieves more line per handle turn. Neither number tells the whole story, because spool diameter and reel design also affect line recovery. For repeated deep mechanical jigging, comfort and sustainable winding power matter as much as headline speed.
If repetitive manual jigging is not practical for you, electric jigging is also a real option. Modern electric reels are available with programmed or manual jigging modes that reproduce repeated lift-and-retrieve patterns. That is a very different experience from manual mechanical jigging, but it can keep deep-water jigging accessible when a high-repetition manual retrieve is not suitable.
Kingfish can hit during the retrieve, on a change of speed or as the jig falls. The priority after contact is to get the line tight and keep it tight. Avoid introducing unnecessary slack while trying to perform an exaggerated strike.
What happens next depends on the structure. A fish hooked well above deep open reef gives you more room than a king hooked close to a wreck or hard pinnacle. Use the rod and drag together, keep pressure smooth and be aware that the first run can put a fish back into structure quickly.

The original article was written during a period when reports were arriving from several east-coast kingfish grounds. These photographs are not current fishing reports and the old jig models shown should not be read as current stock. They are still worth preserving because they document the kind of fish that drove Downrigger Shop's jigging experience at the time.
The coordination feels awkward at first, but the basic rhythm is learnable. Start slowly with short rod strokes and deliberate handle turns. Once the rod and reel movements become one continuous cycle, increase speed. Smooth technique matters more than looking fast.
One-pitch jigging generally coordinates one rod movement with one turn of the reel handle. It is a useful base rhythm for mechanical jigging because the rod action and line recovery stay connected. You can then change the speed and stroke length to alter the jig's action.
No. If the sounder shows kingfish in a specific depth band, concentrate on that water. Working empty water wastes time and energy. If fish are tight to the bottom, start there; if they are suspended, target the suspended school.

Good mechanical jigging is a sequence rather than a single trick: find the fish, choose a jig that reaches them, establish a smooth rod-and-reel rhythm, work the marked depth and vary the cadence when the fish do not respond.
If you are working so hard that your technique falls apart after a few drops, something is worth changing. Shorten the stroke, slow the cadence, reassess the jig weight or rebalance the outfit. The goal is not maximum effort. The goal is to keep a convincing jig moving through the strike zone for as many productive drops as the session gives you.
