Downrigging Cobia

février 06, 2026

Regular readers of this little newsletter know of my fascination for cobia:

Got the big boy above at Hervey Bay when, after a massive battle, a shark bit its tail off. Thank you, sharky! Took a pic of the plotter track after the fight, pretty crazy:

Last year I hooked one just as big at Cooktown – using way too light tackle. First, two teeth sheared off the reel drag. Then, the rod broke. Lastly, the 15 kilo braid parted. All my fault, not the gear. Small or big, they give a huge battle:

Years ago I had a mate from the North Coast who was obsessed with them. He cracked the code and, during summer, would catch monster cobia around Grassy Head. One day we had an interesting conversation when I asked how he targeted them. Because for most fishos, they’re a coincidental capture.

Him: Why do you think cobia follow schools of stingrays?

Me: I figure the rays stir up the sandy bottom, and the cobia eat the stuff they miss.

Him: Do you really think a fish that grows to 40 kilos could subsist on tiny crabs and squirt worms? Think about the shape of a cobia’s mouth.

Me: Okay! It’s wide, big, no teeth, way low on the face. What does all that mean?

Him: Stingrays give live birth. The cobia eat the baby stingrays.

All these memories came flooding back this week, when a message arrived from Justin on the NSW North Coast:

Hi Andrew, very happy with downrigger. We caught 10 cobia and 9 of them were on downrigger we probably 30 hookups but sharks were an issue with getting them to the boat.

We lost the line clip where we had a 100 percent bite to hookup rate but when we had to swap to rubber bands this number declined possibly just coincidence.

Previous years hadn’t owned a downrigger makes me cringe of all the fish we missed by just slow trolling surface baits.

The cobia fishing guide brings the live-bait, jigging and depth-control lessons together, with tackle choices, release checks and current NSW and Queensland limits.

Justin has only had his downrigger since Christmas! If you've been thinking about getting one, make your move. Click the button below and check them out, Andy
