Light game fishing tackle is a joy. No regrets about all the years I spent strapped to big heavy 50/80s, but I’d never go back:

In the old days fishing tackle, especially game reels and rods were extremely heavy

And I don’t need to. Because except for very specific game fish targets I can now do everything needed with a reel that’s half the size, half the weight and – half the price. The TICA ST 12:

Having said that, some things that cannot be compromised. The reel must have good line capacity. Check how fast the spool emptied on this mako we hooked at Browns Mountain:

So when we started to research our new 30-pound lever game reel options good line capacity was non negotiable. The other essential was a carbon fibre drag like the ones fitted to many of the jigging reels we offer. This material has revolutionised fishing reels. It doesn’t overheat, and it doesn’t produce flat or sticky spots in your drag, if the reel is stored with the drag full on.

The TICA comes with Carbontex washers for a perfectly smooth drag

So after lots of testing and considering options we’ve come up with a winner. TICA  is a giant international tackle company.

They make quality game fishing reels:

Two TICA trolling reel and rod combos ready for shipping

Two rod options.

  • Firstly, a straight two-piece five feet six inch overhead rated for 30-50 pound line.
  • Or, a five feet six inch two-piece bent butt rod with roller tip.

If you haven’t tried a bent butt rod previously, take it from me, they’re brilliant.

So much more comfort and so much more leverage available, when needed.

Check out this video? It’s shows the rod we’re talking about, being pushed to the max:

Still a new line, so not many customer reviews received yet. But clients who’ve used them are very pleased indeed:
